Younger generations are increasingly leaning towards favoring socialism over capitalism, according to a new poll taken by Axios. The data indicates that 61% of Americans aged 18-24 have a favorable view of socialism and makeup nearly 37% of the voting pool for 2020.
The trend showcases the troubling shift in politics because of celebrity politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. According to the poll, the main issues in focus by generation are;
- Gen Z; mass shootings, racial equality, and immigration policy and treatment of immigrants.
- Millennials’ top issues are access to health care, global warming/climate change and mass shootings.
- Gen X’s top issues are: access to health care, terrorism/national security and the national debt — the same top issues for boomers and older.
Further, in January 2019 an additional online poll was taken that indicated the alarming shift in American politics.
The polls bring to light the new political reality for American politicians. Further, according to the data, a vast majority of Democrats (90 percent) say they would be excited to vote for a candidate who promises to reform the economic system, with 71 percent of independents saying the same.
The data indicates that sometime soon, the younger generations, as they grow, will eventually attempt to change the current economic model in America.
However, during the 2019 State of the Union Address, having noted the increasing shift towards Socialism, President Donald J. Trump stated that; “Here, in the United States, we are alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country,” the president said. “America was founded on liberty and independence – not government coercion, domination, and control. We are born free, and we will stay free.”
