The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned World Leaders Tuesday of the looming risk of a world divided between the United States and China. The U.N. Chief stated during his annual “State of the world address” that the risk “may not yet be large, but it’s real.”

China and the United States are the two top nations, and the rest of the world is looking to pick a side between the two. The two nations differ ideologically, have rival internets, currency, trade, financial rules, “and their zero sum geopolitical and military strategies.”

“We must do everything possible to avert the great fracture and maintain a universal system, a universal economy with universal respect for international law; a multipolar world with strong multilateral institutions,” he told presidents, prime ministers, monarchs and ministers from the U.N.’s 193 member states.

During the Cold War, the world was mostly Bi-Polar; one on hand the United States and on the other, the Soviet Union. According to the United Nations Secretary-General, the future is deeply divided and facing a climate crisis, “the alarming possibility of armed conflict in the Gulf,” spreading terrorism, rising populism and “exploding” inequality.

The Un Chief stated; “A great many people fear getting trampled, thwarted, left behind. Machines take their jobs. Traffickers take their dignity. Demagogues take their rights. Warlords take their lives. Fossil fuels take their future,” he said.

President Donald Trump represented the United States and during his speech stated; “If you want freedom, hold on to your sovereignty, and if you want peace, love your nation. The future does not belong to globalists. The future belongs to patriots. The future belongs to strong, independent nations,” Trump told the gathering of world leaders.

“Globalism exerted a religious pull over past leaders, causing them to ignore their national interests. Those days are over.”

The United Nations was created on the foundation of multilateralism, and people still believe in the “spirit of ideas.”

The meeting between world leaders comes on the backdrop of flaring tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Further, Saudi Arabia is an ally of the United States and Iran of China.

Guterres issued a dire warning about the conflict on the horizon in the Gulf; “Above all, we are facing the alarming possibility of armed conflict in the Gulf, the consequences of which the world cannot afford,” he said. “In a context where a minor miscalculation can lead to a major confrontation, we must do everything possible to push for reason and restraint.”

The concern issued by Guterres was previously issued by Graham T. Allison of the Belfer Center, Graham stated that the United States and China are headed for the Thucydides Trap. The trap, where a rising nation seeks to displace a ruling one. China, the rising nation, and the United States, the ruling one.
