Peter Thiel a billionaire, Facebook board member, and Trump supporter said during a conference that the United States should open an investigation into Google, regarding their potential for aiding the Chinese military.
Thiel is one of the most powerful players in Silicon Valley, he co-founded PayPal, and has often voiced his support for President Trump.
During Theil’s speech at the National Conservatism Conference, he posed “three questions that should be asked” of Google;
“Number one, how many foreign intelligence agencies have infiltrated your Manhattan Project for AI?
Number two, does Google’s senior management consider itself to have been thoroughly infiltrated by Chinese intelligence?
Number three, is it because they consider themselves to be so thoroughly infiltrated that they have engaged in the seemingly treasonous decision to work with the Chinese military and not with the US military… because they are making the sort of bad, short-term rationalistic [decision] that if the technology doesn’t go out the front door, it gets stolen out the backdoor anyway?”
Further, Thiel stated that these questions “need to be asked by the FBI, by the CIA, and I’m not sure quite how to put this, I would like them to be asked in a not excessively gentle manner.”
Earlier this year Google was accused of helping the Chinese Military by Marine General Joseph Dunford; “The work that Google is doing in China is indirectly benefitting the Chinese military,” he told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
“Frankly, ‘indirect’ may be not be a full characterization of the way it really is,” Dunford continued. “It’s more of a direct benefit to the Chinese military.”
“I have a hard time with companies that are working very hard to engage in the market inside of China, and engaging in projects where intellectual property is shared with the Chinese, which is synonymous with sharing it with the Chinese military, and then don’t want to work for the U.S. military,” Dunford said.
