The Democratic Socialist suggested on Sunday night that having children may not be a good idea because there is a “scientific consensus” that suggests life will be hard for the next generation because of the effects of rampant climate change.

“Our planet is going to hit disaster if we don’t turn this ship around and so it’s basically like, there’s a scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult,” Ocasio-Cortez said while chopping up food in her kitchen during an Instagram live video. “And it does lead, I think, young people, to have a legitimate question, you know, ‘Is it okay to still have children?'”

After briefly suggesting the moral question surrounding young people and children, Cortez then indicates that young people are graduating with so much student loan debt that they can’t even afford to have “kids in the house.”

Further, Cortez then states that legislators introducing watered-down proposals are frankly trying to kill us; however, she clarifies by then saying that a lack of urgency is going to kill us in regards to how humanity responds to climate change.

“We need a universal sense of urgency, and people are trying to introduce watered-down proposals that are frankly going to kill us, a lack of urgency is going to kill us, it doesn’t matter if you agree that climate change is an important issue, at this point it doesn’t matter, if you believe climate change is a problem, that’s not even the issue, the issue is how urgently you feel we need to fix it.”

Previously, Cortez introduced her proposal to counter the effects of climate change called the Green New Deal. Some portions of the plan include; Upgrading and or replacing every building within the United States, building out high-speed rail lines at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary, and decommissioning every nuclear power plant within the United States.
